Required coursework from a NYSED-approved provider. All NY mandated reporters must complete the updated 3-hour training by 11/17/2026.
New York State OCFS / SUNY Buffalo State
NYSED confirms OCFS offers the required training free. All New York mandated reporters must complete the updated 3-hour version by 11/17/2026.
Heads up: If you completed the OCFS training between 11/1/2022 and 8/31/2025 you must also take a short addendum on children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The old 2-hour version closed 8/31/2025.

Required every 4 years from a NYSDOH-approved provider (Public Health Law §239).
Our finding: No free option exists. We checked every provider on both the NYSDOH and NYSED approved lists — all four pages — and every online provider is commercial and fee-based. The Medical Society of the State of New York course is the standard physician choice at $50, free only to MSSNY members. Project Firstline NY is genuinely free but is aimed at frontline staff, does not present itself as the mandated four-hour course, and does not document Category 1 credit.

Bundle worth up to 15 credits; 8 are needed for the DEA attestation.
PCSS / Opioid Response Network
14 stand-alone modules, roughly 0.75–1.25 credits each. Take only what you need.
NEJM Group / Massachusetts Medical Society
Explicitly satisfies the full one-time 8-hour DEA requirement in a single program. No NEJM or MMS membership needed. Carries ABIM, ABA and ABS MOC.
PCSS / American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry
SAMHSA grant-funded. Completing all 8 courses earns a digital badge that PCSS states fulfills the DEA 8-hour requirement. The landing page designates 9.25 credits generally; AMA PRA Category 1 is among the credit types offered.

A one-time 8 hours on substance use disorders, required of every DEA-registered practitioner regardless of state, due at your next registration or renewal. The attestation does not recur — you will not be asked again at future DEA renewals.

You may already be covered. The requirement is satisfied without new coursework if you are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry, graduated within the past five years from a qualifying program whose curriculum included the required content, or previously completed DATA-2000 waiver training.
